Als Sternbild verewigt Durch seinen Hufschlag entsprangen aus dem Fels Quellen, sogenannte Hippokrene, deren Wasser einen daraus Trinkenden zum Dichten ermunterten. Daher wird Pegasus später auch das Dichterpferd genannt. Eine dieser Quellen liegt angeblich im Helikon, eine andere bei der Stadt Troizen.
