Lebensraum der Küstenseeschwalbe sind Meeresküsten, teilweise brütet sie auch in der nordischen Tundra und Taiga an Seen. Sie bevorzugt zur Brutzeit vegetationsarme Flächen, vor allem Sand- und Kiesstrände. Auch breite Flussmündungen und das Watt sind für sie besonders attraktiv.

Das gesamte Gefieder ist grau-weiß, nur während der Paarungszeit ist die Kopfoberseite schwarz gefärbt. Ihr Schnabel ist tiefrot gefärbt und sie hat sehr lange Schwanzfedern. Küstenseeschwalben können bis zu 30 Jahre alt werden.
