Ein endogenes Cushing-Syndrom ist eine sehr seltene Erkrankung, pro Jahr treten etwa 80 bis 240 Neuerkrankungen in Deutschland auf. Frauen erkranken etwa 3-mal so häufig wie Männer. Am häufigsten sind Menschen um das 40. Lebensjahr betroffen, aber auch Kinder oder Jugendliche können ein Cushing-Syndrom bekommen.
Woher kommt das Cushing-Syndrom?
Das klinische Bild des Cushing-Syndroms ist die Folge einer krankhaft gesteigerten Produktion des Nebennierenhormons Cortisol. Die große Mehrzahl der Cushing-Erkrankungen wird durch einen gutartigen Tumor in der Hirnanhangsdrüse ausgelöst, der eine Überproduktion des Hormons ACTH zur Folge hat.
Ist das Cushing Syndrom heilbar?
Ein endogenes Cushing-Syndrom wird entsprechend seiner Ursache behandelt. Bei Tumoren, ob in der Hypophyse oder der Nebennierenrinde, ist das Mittel der ersten Wahl meist eine Operation. Kommt ein Eingriff nicht in Frage, lässt sich ein Tumor unter Umständen auch mittels Strahlentherapie oder Chemotherapie behandeln.

Is there a cure for Cushing syndrome?
Adrenal tumors are usually treated with surgical removal of the affected adrenal gland, leaving the opposite adrenal gland for cortisol production. If the tumor is an adenoma (a benign tumor), surgery always cures the associated Cushing’s syndrome.
